I’m pleased to return as this week’s guest blogger on Author Island to share my new release, “The Sweet Distraction.” Let me tell you a bit about my newest romantic comedy. The main character, George Sullivan, is a writer of thriller novels and he’s about as far down in the dumps as you can get. His last few books haven’t sold very well, he drinks and gambles too much, he’s drifting through life on auto-pilot due to a bad break-up and he’s desperate for success. His agent arranges for him to write the memoir of notorious mob boss Vito Pasquale, who is a big fan of George’s books, and George realizes this could be the big break he’s always wanted. Simple, right? Not a chance. You just know love will get in the way, in the person of the Don’s beautiful but spoiled daughter, Cookie. Cookie is accustomed to getting what she wants and pursues George, but he resists because he fears how her father might react. What happens? Read the book to find out if love triumphs or if George winds up in the middle of Lake Erie in a cement overcoat for fooling around with the Don’s daughter.

This is a very humorous, sexy romance. I had a lot of fun writing this one, and I hope you have as much fun reading it.

I’ll now take your questions.

  1. Hi Tim, Welcome to the Tiki Hut! We're so happy to have you here to help you celebrate your new romantic comedy - THE SWEET DISTRACTION. I read the excerpt on your site and the hot one over on the eXtasy Books Buy page and I loved them both. George is such a great character, you can't help by feel for him.

You began writing action/thrillers, how much different do you find writing for the erotic romance readers is?

  3. Tha main difference I've found in writing erotic romance versus thrillers is the outcome. My action novels had a romantic overtone and hot scenes between the two main characters, but with romance stories I need to remember to put the emphasis on the "hopefully ever after" ending. I might as well clear that up now - both of my romances have ended with the character's futures sort of in limbo. Yes, they're together at the fade out, but what happens then is left hanging. I'm currently working on a new series that mixes intrigue and erotic romance and after writing thrillers I have to keep reminding myself - romance first, action second! When I began this switch with my first one I asked an author friend of mine what style I should adopt. His reponse was "Why change if you're happy with it and it works?" Seemed like good advice.

  4. Interesting post. How did you decide to get into erotic romance? Most male authors would shy away from their books being called romance.

  5. I realize straight erotic romance is a bit different for a male author to get into, and it came about in a funny way. I was doing OK with my other books but a few years ago I attended a large book festival, where other authors were drawing bigger crowds. They were selling romance novels and after reading one of them, I thought it would be fun to write one from the man's point of view. I also thought I could write it better and with a lot more humor.

  6. Hi,

I also love humor with my romance.

So, why did you decide to take the e-book road?

  8. Valerie, I got on the e-book road by default. When I was submiting "Anywhere the Heart Goes" to romance publishers, I noticed most of them had switched to e-books, with great success. My current publisher, eXtasy Books, operates this way, so when they optioned my book I really had little choice. I've since realized that e-books have several advantages over print, for the author as well as the reader - I don't have to worry about returned books, I'm not begging bookstores to host me for signings (which I kind of miss), and the cost is easier on the consumer. With the explosion of Kindle and the other e-readers playing catch up its' a booming market. I predict that in the very near future, all publishers will offer more e-books.

  9. I agree, Tim. I've been a reader of e-books for quite a few years now and it's great how you can keep so many on such a small space!!!

Of course, I have to have them backed up well, incase of computer failures! Learned that the hard way!!!

  10. I actually love romantic comedies written by men. I enjoy the man's point of view. I've only read several books, but a lot of romantic comedy movies are written by men (some based on books by men) so you're in good company.

I'll be checking your book out.

  11. Thanks, Katie. I think you'll like "Anywhere the Heart Goes" because it points out all the crazy things guys go through in their relationships with women. I present both sides, as there are two main male characters - the primary one who's been beaten up in the relationship wars and is blissfully single, and his best friend, who is newly married and making the adjustment. I guess all the disastrous relationships I went through finally came in handy! Of course, there's a fair amount of angst for both parties to overcome in "Sweet Distraction," too.

  12. Great posts on here, Tim! You know, a few years ago when I was trying to decide whether to try my hand at writing an erotic romance novel, Tina (our publisher) said I should do it because everyone has at least one of those books in them. From what I've seen so far, you have many more inside of you and I hope you'll keep on writing them!

  13. Carol, thanks for dropping by! I appreciate the comments, and I think you're right about people having at least one of those books in them. In fact, I think everyone has a story to tell. How many times do we get approached at a book signing by someone who says "I had this idea for a book..." I always ask them: what's stopping you from writing it?
